Classic Cars come to Town

The Petersfield Post & Herald Festival of Transport 2015

Classic Cars came to our local towns of Farnham and Petersfield as part of the celebrations for The Petersfield Spring Festival. The unmistakable hum of vintage, veteran and classic motor vehicles filled the air in East Hampshire and South West Surrey on Sunday May 24th 2015 as bright sunshine greeted the 16th annual Festival of Transport.

Why do we Support our local events?

At Bill Rawles Classic Cars we like to support the local events that take place around our workshop. All proceeds from this wonderful day out were donated to The Petersfield Community Hospital and The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. These are two extremely important facilities in our community.For over 35 years the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice has provided support and care to people and their families affected by a terminal illness, living in West Surrey and North East Hampshire.The NHS/Government only covers 20% of the hospice costs, which means that all the support and generosity of the local community is extremely important. Over £15,000.00 per day is required in order to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support. So it goes without saying why we at Bill Rawles Classic Cars feels the importance of supporting our local events.

What a fantastic turn out, great support and a brilliant atmosphere

For the first time this year the event started from the Upper Hart Car Park, in Farnham. Up to 150 vintage, veteran, classic cars, motorbikes and scooters gathered in a display before setting off on a rally. The organised route took in Farnham Town Centre, Wrecclesham, Bordon and Liphook before joining the Petersfield Spring Festival. We did not actually take part in the rally as we had been asked by event organiser, Alan Wooler, to set up a small stand in Petersfield to mark the start of the classic car display. We went along in our Series 2 E Type Jaguar. As usual the beautiful car attracted a lot of attention, created many conversations and provided a taster of what the public had yet to see. The Jaguar set the scene for the arrival of the other vehicles at 1.00pm. It was great to see the enthusiasm and support of the local people. It is always staggering to see the vast quantity and array of cars that are within our region. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces and friends and great to see the support from a few fellow Austin Healey owners.

Winners and prizes all round

Eric Williams’ glittering 1924 Rolls Royce DR Coupe won the coveted Best Entrant Overall and Best Veteran Car (up to 1926) awards, as judged by the new Farnham Mayor, Pat Frost./

Colin Wallaces’ 1934 MGA PA was named Best Vintage car (up to 1935).

Christopher Roe’s 1937 Riley Lynx Sprite won the Best Classic Car award.

The Best Motorcycle was Malcolm Barton’s 1962 Triumph Thunderbird.

The Best Car (over 1945) was given to Jonathan Phillips for his 1966 Austin Healey 3000. Jonathan was overwhelmed and could not believe his eyes. It was really not expected. Knowing Jonathan very well it was obvious, that although it was just a small achievement in a big world, he was extremely appreciated and over the moon. The prize was presented to Jonathan by Ray Tindle, proprietor of the Tindle Newspaper Group, which includes The Post & Herald and Lesley Farrow, the Mayor of Petersfield.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stephen Whitaker won the award for raising the most sponsorship money after contributing £100.00 to the event’s nominated charities. Alan Wooler Said a big thank you to everyone who made the event possible from participants, to local companies, St John Ambulance and Weyside Rotary Club for Marshalling, to mention just a few. Alan said “Your splendid array of vehicles proudly displayed and generous donations has given us an opportunity to raise the much-needed funds for The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and Petersfield Community Hospital”.
