Our brief was to create a high capacity, baffled aluminum fuel tank for a Mercedes rally car which was going to cover circa 15,000 miles. It needed to fit in the boot and comply with rally regulations as well as having all safety measures such as rollover non-return valve, quick fill nozzle and electronic fuel gauge.
This customer was having a lot of work done, including a full colour change respray and during this time he asked if we could fit the rally style wing vents used on the 3000 competition cars. Here's a series of photographs showing Charlie fitting these vents.
For this fuel tank, we were provided a drawing to build the tank to, this is an external tank to be fitted to a pre war car so finish is really important. The aluminum sections were cut, folded and pressed as required. The tank has aluminum baffles and two Monza style filling caps. To locate the external straps which secure the fuel tank, we machined two wheels for our bead roller and two beads were rolled to the correct width.
After a small hit in the side, this Chevron race car needed a repair section fabricated and welded back in place.
