Austin-Healey 100(4) BN1 & BN2

Built between 1953 and 1956 the Austin-Healey 100 (4) was the first of the iconic Austin-Healey brand. The Healey 100 had two main variations during production, denoted by the codes BN1 or BN2, both cars powered by the same torquey four-cylinder engine and only available as a two-seat model. The BN1 was the first to be produced, with its three-speed gearbox and overdrive. The BN1 was superseded by the BN2, with its four-speed gearbox with overdrive and the addition of the stronger five-stud rear axle (also fitted to some late BN1s), and the styling change of a rear wing swage line. The simplistic lines and interior favours the purists and those who want a true 1950s sports car. Able to reach 100mph, the 100/4 was fitted with its famous folding windscreen which can be lowered virtually flat. Drum brakes all round, disc brake conversions available. Always look out for corrosion common around the sills and chassis or electrolysis between the shroud and wings. Key features include a simplistic dashboard, folding windscreen and diamond shape grille. Early cars can be identified by a two-piece dashboard, three-speed gearbox, 'Austin of England' badge rather than Austin-Healey, and no reflectors on the rear shroud.

Austin-Healey 100M and M Spec

The question always asked is, "is it a genuine 'M', period aftermarket kit or retro-fitted?". The truth is, without documentation, it's hard to tell. There were only a handful of genuine factory Healey 100 'M' cars and the exact identity is only known through the order of a bonnet, more can be found on the M spec registry website.
Usually, there are three different scenarios:

1. 'Factory' M. - the standard car was built and then rolled into the next room to have the M kit fitted. Factory cars are hard to find and tricky to identify but, if genuine, they are valuable cars.
2. Dealer fit M kit - Most cars had the M kits 'dealer fitted' in period and they were an aftermarket upgrade that you could buy and the dealership or the owner would fit in period. Not to be confused with factory Ms.
3. Retro fit kit - It is likely that the car was upgraded at some point in its life to M spec. This is a good and recognised upgrade for a Healey 100 and will improve its drive, value, desirability and looks.
Regardless of its heritage, if a Healey 100 is fitted with a full M kit, the overall car is lifted to a new level. A few main upgrades include 1 3/4" SU carbs, M inlet mainfold, cold air box, M cam shaft, pistons, anti roll bar, front springs, louvered bonnet, leather strap and M badge.
Be cautious when buying an M spec car, ensure you trace the heritage and just because it has a louvered bonnet doesn't mean it's an M! Upgrading your standard 100 to M spec is a viable route but this will cost in the region of £10,000-£15,000.

Austin-Healey 100/6

The first of the six-cylinder cars (oval grille) were produced between 1956 and 1959 and came in two variations, the BN4 and BN6. BN4: four seats and BN6: two seats. Note this is the only series to use an 'N' for a four seat model of Healey.
A 2.6-litre six-cylinder engine, four-speed 'side change' gearbox with overdrive and updated interior and styling introduced the first 'Big Healey'. The 100/6 provided improved performance over the 100/4 but is slightly heavier to drive. Fitted with drum brakes (which can be upgraded to discs), the 100/6 offers the 3000 experience for a more reasonable price as it is slightly less desirable over the 3000 Mk1, 2 & 3. Early cars can be identified by a ridge in the bonnet and 'sliding hood', later cars then had the 3000 MK1 bonnet (as they moved factory and re-tooled). The 100/6 is not worth as much as a 3000 but with similar styling, they are easily confused.

Austin-Healey 100/6 'S'

An identical car to the 100/6 in most features but the 100/6 S was produced with four-wheel disc brakes. Only a limited number of around 35 100/6 Ss were produced and the disc brakes were to homologate four-wheel disc brakes for racing.

Austin-Healey 3000 Mk1

Produced between late 1959 and 1961, the MKI was the first of the 3000s, similar styling but with big upgrades, the 3000 was a step up from the 100/6.
The MKI 3000 brought along a three-litre engine and the addition of front disc brakes which were a great improvement over the 100/6's drums. Still fitted with a side change gearbox, optional overdrive and horizontal slatted grille with crossed bonnet grille, the 3000 MkI was available as BN7 or BT7 (for the 3000 MkI and MkII the BN7 is the two-seat car and BT7 the four-seat).

Austin-Healey 3000 MkII

A continuation from the MkI, the MkII has many similarities to the MkI. Styling was updated to the later vertical slatted grille with surround, centre change gearbox and triple SU carb set up. Built between 1961 and 1962.

BT7 £30,000-£60,000
BN7 £40,000-£75,000
UK RHD BN7 £80,000-£150,000 (only 35 produced)

Austin-Healey 3000 MkIIA

Arguably the best model, a mix of old and new, comfort and sports. The MkIIA was produced between 1962 and 1964 but with a relatively low production run and with over 90% of cars built in 1963 heading to North America, a genuine UK RHD MkIIA would be a nice car to purchase.
The main features of the car over the MkII are the wrap around windscreen with quarter lights, wind up windows and pop up hood, just like the later MKIIIs. The bonus is that the IIA features the early interior, dashboard and no centre console seen in the later MkIIIs.

If you are looking for an early car but want the practicality of the late MkIII, then the MkIIA would be a great option.

Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII (Phase 1, 2 and 3)

Built between 1964 and 1968, the 3000 MkIII is the most popular model of Austin-Healey, able to be used for short trips or longer continental touring. Upgrades include locking doors, pop-up hood and wind-up windows as well as a dipped chassis (better ground clearance) and independent side and indicator lights on the later cars. The MkIII came in three phases and as with a lot of car manufacturing of the time, there were some crossover parts as they transitioned models and phases but all are easily identified by their walnut dashboard.
Phase 1, early MkIII is close to a MkIIA, featuring the same pull door handles, single combined (early, small) side and indicator lights and a flat chassis. The only real differences between a MkIIA and a MkIII P1 were the dashboard and slightly more power.
Phase 2 has single indicator and side lights, (now large side lights) cross over models sometimes have a mix of small and large on the rear shroud. Now with a dipped chassis for better ground clearance and locking door handles as well as bigger type 16 brakes with servo.
Phase 3 was the last version of the MkIII, produced just as the car finished production. Separate twin side and indicator lights, dipped chassis, pram hood, wind up windows, walnut dash, bigger type 16 brakes with servo. A common misconception is that the last 500 were painted metallic golden beige, this was not the case. Although a rare colour, around 500 golden beige cars were built with the longest continuous run of 93 cars.

Austin-Healey 100S

The Austin-Healey 100S was developed during 1953 and 1954. The ‘S’ was supposed to stand for Sebring, where a development car had come first in class in 1954, as well as third overall. The production model 100S made its competition debut in the 1955 Sebring race. There were five works development or special test cars, which carried SPL prefixed chassis numbers. The 50 production cars were delivered from February to November 1955. It is thought that there are only 37 still in existence.

Bill Rawles Classic Cars has been fortunate to look after and maintain several original Austin-Healey 100S cars. The rarity of these cars means that they don’t often come on the open market, but when they do, they can command a significant price, usually in the region of £550K to £900K with special examples being over £1,000,000.
